The Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH) recently hosted a delegation from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) team, alongside its implementing partner, KNCV Nigeria. The visit aimed to supervise and evaluate the impact of the TB LON 1/2 project at the facility, underscoring USAID’s commitment to strengthening healthcare systems and combating tuberculosis (TB) in Nigeria.

During the visit, the USAID delegation toured various state of the art TB service delivery points within the hospital. These points provide TB screening services to all patients visiting the facility, a crucial step in early detection and treatment of the disease. The team engaged in discussions with RSUTH management, Directly Observed Treatment, Short-course (DOTS) providers, and other healthcare professionals to assess the effectiveness of current TB services.

Key areas of focus during the evaluation included patient management strategies, infection prevention and control measures, and the efficiency of TB case finding processes. USAID representatives commended RSUTH for their efforts in creating a supportive work environment and for providing a suitable office space for the newly established DOTS office.

The Chief Medical Director, Prof. Chizindu A. Alikor receiving the delegation, highlighted the critical role of sustained collaboration between international partners like USAID and the Rivers State Government in overcoming healthcare challenges. Prof. Alikor reiterated RSUTH’s commitment to offering both technical and financial support to enhance TB services in Rivers State.

The visit concluded with a roundtable discussion between RSUTH’s Management and USAID’s team. The discussion focused on recommendations to further improve TB case finding and management at the hospital, ensuring better health outcomes for the community.

This visit reinforces RSUTH’s dedication to improving health care delivery and also marks the commitment of the Rivers State Government in the ongoing fight against tuberculosis in Rivers State.
