In a concerted effort to combat cancer and promote early detection, the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH), in collaboration with the Nigeria Cancer Society, commemorated World Cancer Day with a themed event, and “United by Unique.”
The event commenced with a symbolic awareness walk from RSUTH to Old GRA, Port Harcourt, and drawing participation from healthcare professionals, patients, and community members. Following the walk, a high-impact seminar was held at the RSUTH Infectious Disease Unit Hall, featuring expert presentations on critical aspects of cancer care.
Representing the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Chizindu A. Alikor, the Deputy Chief Medical Director, Dr. Simon S. Uriah, led RSUTH’s participation in the awareness campaign focused on educating the public about cancer prevention and control. This initiative aligns with the renewed commitment of the Rivers State Government, under the visionary leadership of His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, GSSRS, DSc, whose administration has significantly strengthened the health sector, particularly RSUTH in the fight against critical health conditions like cancer through enhanced healthcare policies, infrastructure, and support for specialized medical interventions.
The seminar featured insightful lectures from leading experts, including Dr. Egbuchilem Chisor-Wabali on the early detection of prostate cancer and Dr. Leesi Sapira-Ordu on preventing cervical cancer in developing nations. The RSUTH Surgery Department highlighted the burden of breast cancer through case studies, while Dr. Florence K. Briggs explored the impact of chemotherapy on heart health. Rounding out the discussions, Dr. Linda Anucha Dublin Green emphasized the importance of hematological cancer screening.
The event, which was well-attended by RSUTH staff, patients, and members of the public, was lauded as a very strategic initiative for raising awareness and fostering dialogue on cancer prevention and management.
Observed annually on February 4, World Cancer Day is a global initiative dedicated to reducing the burden of cancer through advocacy, education, and community engagement. This year’s commemoration at RSUTH underscored the critical role of unity in advancing cancer awareness and early detection efforts.
