RIVERS STATE UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL INAUGURATES KIDNEY TRANSPLANT TEAM

In a landmark advancement for healthcare delivery in Rivers State, the Kidney Transplant Team of Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH) was formally inaugurated on Monday February 10th, 2025 by the Chief Medical Director of RSUTH, Professor Chizindu A. Alikor.

The primary purpose of the Kidney Transplant Team is to oversee the full commencement of kidney transplant services at RSUTH, ensuring the hospital becomes a leading centre for renal transplantation in the region. This initiative aims to provide comprehensive, world-class renal care to patients in Rivers State and beyond, reducing the need for patients to seek specialized kidney treatment outside the state. The newly established team, led by nephrologist Dr. Beniboba Jenewari Eleki, who also heads the RSUTH Renal Centre, is set to revolutionize renal care services in the region. Dr. Egbuchilem Chisor-Wabali has been appointed as the secretary of the team, further strengthening the unit’s administrative and operational framework.

During the inauguration ceremony, Prof. Alikor emphasized the importance of efficiency and professionalism in the team’s operations. He charged the team to submit a comprehensive preliminary report within the shortest possible time to ensure the seamless commencement of renal transplant services at the hospital. He emphasized that this development marks a significant milestone in RSUTH’s commitment to providing world-class healthcare services.

Prof. Alikor extended profound appreciation to His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, GSSRS, DSc, the Executive Governor of Rivers State, whose firm support and visionary leadership continue to propel the state’s healthcare sector to new heights. The CMD also acknowledged the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Rivers State, Dr. Adaeze C. Oreh, for her dedication and contributions towards enhancing healthcare infrastructure and services in the state.

Once fully operational, patients will be able to access cutting-edge renal transplant procedures right here in Rivers State, eliminating the need to seek such specialized care outside the state. RSUTH is poised to become a leading centre for renal care and transplantation, offering hope and improved quality of life for patients within and beyond Rivers State.
