RIVERS STATE UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL INAUGURATES INSTITUTE OF INFECTIOUS DISEASE, RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT AND LAUNCHES MPOX SCREENING APP TO STRENGTHEN THE FIGHT AGAINST INFECTIOUS DISEASES
In a groundbreaking development in the fight against infectious diseases, the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH) has officially inaugurated the Institute of Infectious Disease Research and Development (IIDRD) and launched the innovative Mpox Screening App. This pioneering initiative, unveiled earlier today, February 20, 2025, aims to enhance disease surveillance and management, marking a significant leap in healthcare advancement in Rivers State and Nigeria at large.
The launch ceremony was well-attended by key stakeholders from the health sector, including the government, the private sector, and industry. The Chief Medical Director of RSUTH, Prof. Chizindu A. Alikor, welcomed Dr. Adaeze C. Oreh, the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Rivers State, and other dignitaries to the event. Prof. Alikor emphasized that the establishment of the IIDRD and the innovative Mpox App underscores RSUTH’s continued commitment to advancing healthcare through cutting-edge research, technological innovation, and digital solutions
Prof. Alikor thanked His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, GSSRS, D.Sc., the Executive Governor of Rivers State, emphasizing that this milestone was made possible by the Governor’s firm support and transformative leadership. His Excellency’s commitment to improving the state’s healthcare infrastructure and delivery has been instrumental in bringing this project to fruition.
A major highlight of the inauguration ceremony was the unveiling of the Institutes handbook and the launch of the Mpox Screening App, a state-of-the-art digital tool designed to provide innovative screening for Mpox. Following the launch, a comprehensive tour of the Infectious Disease Unit was conducted, where the commissioner and other dignitaries had the opportunity to explore the world-class facility and its cutting-edge equipment, which are crucial to the success of the Institute’s mission.
This transformative achievement represents a pivotal step forward in Nigeria’s fight against infectious diseases, setting new standards for research, surveillance, and healthcare innovation. RSUTH continues to lead the charge in public health excellence, making it a beacon for future healthcare developments in the country.
