In a landmark move, the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH) has launched a cutting-edge Newborn Screening Programme, poised to drastically reduce infant mortality and morbidity in the state.

The programme, officially launched on February 27, 2026, was graced by the presence of the Deputy Governor of Rivers State, Prof. Ngozi Odu, who commended RSUTH for this bold initiative.

“This programme is a beacon of hope for the people of Rivers State,” Prof. Odu said, emphasizing that early detection means intervention and treatment, which saves lives, prevents disabilities, and gives every child the opportunity to grow and thrive. She assured the gathering of the government’s unwavering support for the programme, aligning with the Governor’s vision of providing “Health for all Rivers people.”

Prof. Chizindu Alikor, CMD RSUTH, highlighted the programme’s significance, stating that RSUTH has taken a bold step to address a critical gap in our healthcare system. He noted that full-package neonatal screening for newborns is rarely done in teaching hospitals and federal centres.

Dr. Boma West, a Neonatologist, emphasized that early detection and intervention can significantly reduce child mortality and improve the quality of life of children.

The launch event was attended by RSUTH Management and Board Chairman, Dr. Sampson Parker, the Executive Secretary of Rivers State Contributory Health Protection Program (RIVCHPP) Dr. Vetty Agala, Secretary, Paediatric Association of Nigeria, SOGON represented by Prof Ngozi Orazulike and other dignitaries. The launch of the Newborn Screening Programme is a testament to RSUTH’s commitment to excellence in maternal and child healthcare and a significant step towards strengthening healthcare delivery and promoting preventive medicine in Rivers State
