The Department of Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Surgery at the RSUTH Annex Hospital has commemorated World Hearing Day 2026 with a series of public awareness campaigns and free hearing screening for children in
Rivers State.

The event, which held from March 3 to March 6, aimed at educating the public on proper ear care and the importance of early detection of hearing problems among children.

Speaking during the programme, the Head of the ENT Department, Prof. Ureh Annabel Oparaodu, who led the initiative, emphasized that early hearing checks are essential for children’s speech development, learning ability, and overall well-being.

The activities were organized under the theme “From Communities to Classroom: Hearing Care for Every Child,” highlighting the need for increased awareness and accessible hearing care services for children both at home and in schools.

As part of the commemoration, free hearing screening was provided for children between the ages of 0 and 18 years, encouraging parents and caregivers to take advantage of early hearing assessments to prevent long-term complications.

The department also expressed appreciation to the Chief Medical Director of RSUTH, Prof. Chizindu Alikor, for his continuous support and commitment to improving healthcare services in the hospital.

The free screening exercise attracted many families across the state, reinforcing the hospital’s commitment to improving ear health and promoting better hearing care for children in Rivers State.
