The Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH) recently hosted a 2-day training for health workers on cancer treatment guidelines and chemo safety practices. The event, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health and the American Cancer Society Global Academy, aimed to enhance health professionals’ skills in managing cancer treatment and handling hazardous drugs.
Topics covered included the use of National Comprehensive Cancer Network Harmonized cancer treatment guidelines, CHEMOSAFE & PAIN MANAGEMENT. Experts presented on hazardous drugs, personal protective equipment (PPE), spill control, and waste management. In attendance and speakers included The Federal Ministry of Health ably represented by Dr Uche Nwokwu, the National Cordinator of Oncology and Nuclear Medicine. Dr Rafil Akande, a representative of the American Cancer Society, Prof. Kalada Korubo, Dr. E. Chisor Wabali, Dr. Rex Ijah, Pharmacist Aham-Ochi Victoria, Dr. Wobo, Emmanuel.
The Chief Medical Director (CMD) RSUTH, Prof. Chizindu A. Alikor, commended the team for a training well put together. The training included practical sessions, deemed enlightening for medical and non-medical personnel, enhancing their understanding of cancer treatment guidelines and CHEMOSAFE practices.
Prof. Kalada Korubo appreciated the CMD RSUTH Prof. Alikor for ensuring the drive of this Federal Teaching Hospital training is effective at RSUTH. The ChemoSafe program aims to improve safe handling, administration, and disposal of hazardous chemotherapy drugs in Low- and Middle-Income Countries.
The training objectives were to enhance knowledge, improve chemotherapy safety, equip participants with pain management strategies, and promote evidence-based practice. Expected outcomes include improved competency among health workers, enhanced patient safety, and increased awareness of standardized protocols in managing cancer patients.
The event represents a significant step towards optimizing cancer care in Rivers State, empowering health workers with tools and knowledge for best practices in treatment and management.
