In line with the commitment of the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH), Professor Chizindu A. Alikor, to enhance public awareness and hospital preparedness for cardiac emergencies, the Department of Anaesthesiology organized a Hospital Grand Round on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) on February 24, 2026.

The session, led by Dr. Williams Jumbo, focused on improving emergency response skills and survival outcomes in cases of cardiac arrest. It provided healthcare professionals with practical knowledge on early recognition, rapid intervention, and the critical steps needed to preserve life.

During the presentation, it was emphasized that immediate CPR is vital for preserving brain function and increasing the chances of survival. The session also highlighted persistent gaps in training, awareness, and response systems across Nigerian hospitals, underlining the urgent need for ongoing professional development in life-saving techniques.

Participants were guided through practical steps and best practices to enhance emergency response, with emphasis on improving patient outcomes through skillful and timely intervention.

The program reflects Professor Alikor’s unwavering dedication to strengthening emergency care, promoting patient safety, and fostering a culture of preparedness at RSUTH. Through initiatives like this, the hospital continues to equip healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to save lives in critical situations.
