The Chief Medical Director of the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH), Professor Chizindu Alikor, has called for a balanced integration of faith, informatics, and artificial intelligence (AI) in the pursuit of holistic healthcare.
He made this remark during a one-day retreat for doctors organized by the Peace House Medical Mission in collaboration with RSUTH, held on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, at the IDU Conference Hall, Port Harcourt.
Themed “The Intersection of Faith, Informatics and Artificial Intelligence in the Attainment of Health, the retreat sought to explore how technological advancement can align with ethical and spiritual values to enhance medical practice and patient well-being.
In his address, Professor Alikor commended the Peace House Medical Mission for their ongoing collaboration with the hospital, describing the retreat as both timely and thought-provoking. He emphasized that while artificial intelligence and data-driven systems are revolutionizing healthcare delivery, they should complement rather than replace the moral and compassionate essence of medical service.
Prof Alikor brought to the fore that medicine is not only a science but also a sacred calling. Faith gives us purpose, technology gives us tools, and together, they empower us to serve humanity with precision, empathy, and hope.
The event featured presentations by Professor Gbenga Mokuolu of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital and Dr. Peter Abah of Peace House Medical Missions, who examined how AI and health informatics can improve efficiency while upholding human values in medicine.
Participants described the retreat as enlightening, reaffirming their commitment to ethical practice and compassionate care in an age of rapid technological change.
Professor Alikor expressed optimism that the discussions and insights shared would strengthen doctors’ resolve to integrate innovation with empathy in their daily work, enduring that faith and technology jointly advance the frontiers of health in society.
