Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH), in partnership with Smile Train, has launched a revolutionary Cleft Awareness Advocacy Campaign in local dialects. This bold initiative aims to shatter stigmas, educate the public, and provide life-changing cleft surgery services to those in need.
Prof. Chizindu A. Alikor, RSUTH’s Chief Medical Director, reaffirmed the hospital’s unwavering commitment to removing barriers to care, offering free surgery, transportation, and nutritional support for cleft palate patients. He extended gratitude to Smile Train- the world’s largest cleft charity organization, for this partnership that is bringing smiles to patients and their families.
He also thanked the Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, and Dr. Adaeze Oreh, Hon. Commissioner of Health, Rivers State, for their tireless support in elevating healthcare services.
Dr. Oti Nimi Aria, Head of Cleft and Craniofacial Surgery, stressed the critical role of nutrition in successful cleft surgeries, mandating nutritional assessments for children scheduled for surgery. The campaign’s goals include disseminating vital information in local dialects, reaching rural communities, and promoting inclusiveness.
This pioneering campaign is set to transform lives, ensuring that financial or geographical barriers no longer stand in the way of life-changing cleft surgery and multidisciplinary care.
