
The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has appointed Prof. Chizindu A. Alikor, Chief Medical Director of Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH), as a distinguished member and Co-Chair of the National Nuclear Medicine Technical Working Group (NM-TWG). This prestigious appointment, announced by the Honourable Minister of State for Health, Dr. Mukhtar Yawale Muhammad (STA/HMH), underscores Prof. Alikorβs outstanding expertise and leadership in the field of Nuclear Medicine.
The NM-TWG was reactivated to serve as an advisory body for the development and seamless implementation of Nigeriaβs National Nuclear Medicine Programme, aimed at enhancing access to advanced diagnostic and therapeutic services, particularly for the treatment of cancers and other critical diseases. The inauguration ceremony, held on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at the Ministerial Conference Hall, Federal Ministry of Health Headquarters, Abuja, marked a significant milestone in the nationβs commitment to strengthening nuclear medicine services.
Prof. Alikorβs elevation to Co-Chair of the Technical Working Group is a testament to his immense contributions to nuclear medicine, cardiovascular medicine, and medical leadership in Nigeria. His appointment is expected to bring transformative benefits to the nation’s healthcare system, likewise positioning the state as a hub for cutting-edge nuclear medicine services. The National Nuclear Medicine Technical Working Group comprises a distinguished assembly of experts and key stakeholders dedicated to advancing nuclear medicine in Nigeria. Members include all Nuclear Physicians, the Director General of the National Institute of Cancer Research and Treatment, the President of the Nigeria Cancer Society, the President of the African College of Surgeons, representatives from the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, and the National Coordinator of the National Cancer Control and Nuclear Medicine Programme. Additionally, the group features pivotal institutions such as the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission, the Nigeria Nuclear Regulatory Agency, and the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority. International collaboration is strengthened by the inclusion of the WHO Country Representative, alongside representatives from leading medical equipment companies.
