The Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH) took a significant step towards bolstering emergency care with a momentous visit from a delegation representing the National Emergency Medical Service and Ambulance Systems (NEMSAS). Professor Chizindu A. Alikor, the Chief Medical Director of RSUTH, warmly received the delegation led by Dr. Emuren Doubra, Head of Operations at NEMSAS.

The NEMSAS team presented their program to RSUTH, highlighting impactful initiatives. A crucial pillar of their collaboration is dedicated support for the hospital’s obstetric emergency cases. This includes providing critical ambulance services, aiming to significantly reduce maternal mortality rates, particularly those caused by obstetric hemorrhage, a leading culprit in the country. This life-saving program offers immense peace of mind to expecting mothers and their families.

Dr. Sylvanus Ojum, Director of Rivers State Emergency Medical Service and Ambulance Systems (REMSAS), accompanied the NEMSAS delegation. The visit fostered a spirit of collaboration between national and state-level emergency medical services.

Professor Alikor expressed his sincere appreciation to the President for this groundbreaking initiative and commended Dr. Doubra for his instrumental role. He was particularly enthusiastic about the program’s nationwide implementation, acknowledging its potential to revolutionize emergency medical care across the country.

The CMD pledged RSUTH’s full cooperation and highlighted their openness to collaboration and partnership. This collaborative spirit, coupled with the unwavering commitment of the Governor of Rivers State, His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara GSSRS, and the dedication of the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Adaeze Chidinma Oreh, positions REMSAS for remarkable success.

To ensure a smooth integration of NEMSAS’s services, a comprehensive assessment was conducted. The NEMSAS team inspected the hospital’s Accident & Emergency (A&E) department and Labour Ward. This inspection will pave the way for the upcoming branding of the center, ensuring a seamless transition and clear identification of NEMSAS’s presence within RSUTH.

The NEMSAS visit to RSUTH marks a significant step forward in fortifying emergency medical care in Rivers State. With a focus on improved maternal health outcomes, national-level support, and a commitment to collaboration, this initiative has the potential to revolutionize emergency medical services in the region.
